Additions to the agenda: Update on multi-jurisdictional bike trails
New Business:
1. GHF Representative - Sandra Murphy, Gorman Heritage Farm (GHF) Director
- As part of the Gorman’s deed to the village, the farm is focused on education, agriculture, and recreation. With the sudden on set of more animals and the need for grazing pastures, the fences were installed. Some signage needs to be moved and trails need to be re-worked. Farm gates and a management gate need to be added.
- The small trail loop is still available; while the main trail has been moved out between the property fence and pasture fence. Walkers can still use the farm road to access the trail between the fences and the former trail.
- Some dying trees, non-native species, and evasive trees have been removed and these areas will be replanted with native trees; and the trail will be re-worked so it is not rough.
- The fencing went up so quickly that commission members could not answer residents’ questions when they arose. The fence was not installed as proposed during a meeting with GHF neighbors. If the farm looses the support of the neighbors and the people who use the farm, even if for just recreational purposes, this could have long term repercussions.
- Because Commission members get a lot of questions regarding the farm, Commission would like to have more communication with the farm, and its leadership. Recreation Commission member Gus Janszen plans on attending the next meeting of the GHF board.
Old Business:
a. Lifestyle fitness classes are going well this season.
- With the re-structuring of the RFP, the village has recovered approximately $6500 for fitness class fees.
b. The budget sub-committee met and created a recommendation for the 2010budget to council.
- In these economic times, the sub-committee thought it was wise to be the same or below the 2009 budget. After a line item by line item review, their proposal is just below the 2009 budget. New HVAC and roof for the north section of the building is listed in the five year capital plan because David would like this section of the building completed within two years of the south end roof (which is scheduled for this year). Additional tennis courts were requested to be added in the five year capital plan.
- Motion to approve the budget subcommittee recommendations made by Gus Janszen; seconded by Wayne Mosley. Motion approved.
c. The Bicycling/Moving America Forward group has had two very productive meetings.
- Evendale, Blue Ash, Reading, Glendale, and Sharonville are part of the group. Each community is really getting into this project. OKI, URS, and Queen City Bike are assisting with the project.
- Each community is developing their goals, which will be brought to the next meeting, to be combined into a multi-jurisdictional initiative. If commission members have specific ideas they should get them to Michele or Stiney. OKI is bringing a regional trail map to the meeting.
- The village engineer should also be kept informed so bike lanes can be added to street projects. Glendale Milford to I-75 is the next project and they are already looking at the laws for adding a bike lane/line.
Director’s Report:
- No signs of leaks in the main joints of the pool shell. The next step is to check the pool apparatuses, gutter lines and return lines. The three year water usage data does not show much variance; but David and the pool management company suspect leaks. Weather can account for high evaporation; but this year’s weather cannot account for the amount of water lost each day.
- Pat Schappacher retired after almost twenty years of service to the department. Commission extends their appreciation to Pat for her years of service and dedication.
- New software purchased this year for registrations, rentals, and memberships is coming online. Registration is now completely done in the new software; facility rentals switch over will be completed shortly; while memberships will happen in December when the 2010 memberships go on sale. The new software generates data correctly and will even create graphs to explain the data; two things the former software could not do.
- At this time the door locks will remain on separate software due to propriety issues.
- The new software company is quick to respond to questions, program issues, and even suggestions.
Phi Lambda Pi Report:
- The Fresh Meat Competition has finished. Daniel Schneider and Tim Fortner were this year’s competition champions.
- Entertainment Book sales are underway.
- Younger member attendance remains strong while junior and senior attendance numbers have lessened.
- Some juniors and seniors don’t like to sign up if a number of eighth graders and freshman have signed up. Some of the younger kids are loud and older members can be bothered by this. The older members also have sports and jobs to contend with. What activities could be added to bring the juniors and seniors back on a regular basis?
Open Discussion:
- Ladies Night at the Pool went very well.
- Dog Day also went well until the last half hour of the “big” dog session when it began to storm.
- Tony Teufel is planning to return next summer as our tennis pro.
Motion to adjourn made at 9:07am by Gus Janszen; seconded by Alex Mosley. Motion approved.
